Social networking on the rise

Posted by jtsmyth8 on September 27, 2010

Facebook, Twitter, blogs, you name it Asians are jumping on the technology faster than any other region. So much so that Internet bigwigs are starting to notice. Just some numbers for you to consider: 3 out of 5 people in Singapore have a Facebook account. There are over 200 million bloggers in China double that of the U.S. 37% of total tweets come from Japan, Indonesia and South Korea.

So what does it all mean? Advertising. More advertising targeted for Asian users. It’s a sheer numbers game. More eyes looking at your site, mean more people to flash commercials to. I am not looking forward to wading through all the ads to do my status updates.

Is Singapore too strict?

Posted by jtsmyth8 on May 20, 2008

Singapore should consider relaxing some of its strict social laws to allow for greater creativity, which will help it stay competitive in the long term, a top World Bank official said on Tuesday.

‘Singapore has made a monumental contribution to the field of development,’ Juan Jose Daboub, the Bank’s managing director, said at a public lecture.

But he said a question confronting its leaders is ‘whether it is ready to face the challenges of implementing cutting-edge reforms needed to further improve its position in the competitive global environment’.

He added: ‘One such challenge is the tricky task of balancing a desire for social order and stability – for many years a defining quality of Singapore’s growth – with a need to allow more innovation and creativity to produce high-value goods and services in a more competitive global economy.’

‘Innovation and creativity are, by definition, not orderly, and not regulated,’ Mr Daboub said.

‘As Singapore looks to a growing and prosperous future, striking the right balance will call for some skilled stewardship and probably some risk-taking.’ (story)

Singaporeans: gambling potentially harmful

Posted by jtsmyth8 on November 5, 2007

Gambling can lead to very serious problems. Make sure you spot the symptoms. If your best friend decides to stay home and play poker online rather than hit the clubs with you and some girls then he’s got a problem. Ask, inquire, find out then take action. Don’t let him dig his own grave. Gambling leads to addiction, debt, depression, and possible crime. If you care, then don’t ignore the warning signs.

“Most Singaporeans will turn to their families for help on gambling-related problems and almost half will apply for casino exclusion orders to ban the person from visiting the casino.

These are among the key findings in a follow-up survey carried out by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG), which showed that the majority of Singaporeans still view gambling as potentially harmful and are aware of the signs of problem gambling and where to seek help.” (story)
