MDA encouraging game development with $50,000

Posted by jtsmyth8 on June 23, 2008

Game developers dreaming of creating the next Halo or Grand Theft Auto game can now turn to a more generous government grant to get them off the ground.

They can now get up to $50,000 each to get their games marketed to big publishers and sold to gamers worldwide.

This is part of the Invigorate scheme that the Media Development Authority (MDA) runs yearly to identify and help promising local developers.

This year, it will fund up to 10 developers which can come up with games that are ‘cross-platform’. In other words, these games can be played on the PC, game console and mobile phone. (story)

Singapore gives approval for gay couple to perform

Posted by jtsmyth8 on November 22, 2007

In a rare move, Singapore has given approval for an American gay couple to perform next month as part of a concert to raise awareness of HIV/Aids. The Los Angeles-based Christian gay couple Jason and deMarco were barred in 2005 from performing in the city-state.

But the Media Development Authority (MDA) said it had approved a concert this time because organisers had given assurances that they aimed to highlight the HIV/Aids issue.

‘In 2005, a similar concert featuring the pop duo was disallowed because the concert was open to general members of the public,’ the MDA’s deputy director for arts and licensing, Amy Tsang, said in a statement on Thursday. (story)

Mass Effect hits shelves with M18 rating

Posted by jtsmyth8 on November 22, 2007

Role-playing game Mass Effect will go on sale with an M18 sticker attached to its packaging, the first game to carry a local classification rating.

According to the Media Development Authority, games rated as such cannot be sold to those under 18.

As with videos, game retailers are required to enforce the age restriction and check a customer’s ID when in doubt.

MDA did not specify the penalties for selling the game to a minor, saying that it ‘will work closely with the distributors to facilitate a smooth implementation of the system’.

According to the Films Act, those who allow minors to possess ‘obscene films’ are liable to be fined or jailed.

Six industry figures who attended consultation sessions to gather feedback on a tentative model for games classification indicated that it is modeled heavily after that for films. (story)
