Anwar Ibrahim taken to hospital

Posted by jtsmyth8 on July 16, 2008

Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has been taken to hospital after his arrest on sodomy allegations, and is believed to be undergoing a medical examination, his party said on Wednesday.

‘We think that he’s being taken for a medical examination but we’re not sure,’ said Mr Tian Chua, information chief for Mr Anwar’s Keadilan party which leads a three-member opposition alliance.

‘I don’t think this is necessary. If you need a DNA swab you can do it up there (in police headquarters), you don’t need to take a man to hospital for a DNA swab,’ he told reporters.

‘This is a big game being played out.’ (story)

Malaysian couple get cheap hotel, expensive hookers outside

Posted by jtsmyth8 on June 6, 2008

Can I get the name of that hotel?

“Malaysian journalist Fauzi Baharuddin, 28, ended up with more than he bargained for when he realised that his hotel was in the heart of Singapore’s red-light district.

‘I booked the hotel as it was the cheapest I could find.’

But soon after he and his fiancee arrived at the hotel, Mr Fauzi realised that something was not right.

He said: ‘That night, my fiancee and I decided to go out for a walk and we were shocked. There were prostitutes and their clients outside the hotel who were propositioning their clients openly.'” (story)

Singapore pilot caught with child porn

7 video files were found on the personal computer of a Singapore Airlines (SIA) pilot who was fined A$12,000 for trying to bring child pornography into Australia, court documents showed on Wednesday. Some of the videos contained footage of rape, sexual violence and children engaged in sexual activity, the documents said.

Captain Ng Kok Yauw, 41, a Malaysian, piloted a Singapore Airlines flight last Saturday from Singapore to Adelaide, Australia, when customs officials searched his laptop and found video clips of child pornography, Adelaide court documents seen by Reuters said.

Ng, who appeared in court on Monday, pleaded guilty to charges of importing banned material and making a false statement to a customs officer.

He could not be reached for comment but Singapore Airlines, the world’s second-largest airline by market value, said the airline was conducting its own investigation. (story)

Malaysian family charged with human smuggling

Posted by jtsmyth8 on February 9, 2008

A Malaysian woman and her two grown children were charged on Friday with trying to sneak three Sri Lankan kids to London. The trio were arrested Thursday evening at Changi Airport after a security officer suspected the children’s identities did not match the Malaysian passports they held.

The kids, all about 11 years old, were about to board a plane for London with the suspects, according to the charges filed.

Police are probing whether the incident is connected to a larger child-smuggling operation. Police spokesman Ng Siew Hua said the kids be cared for while investigations continue.

Looking grim, Madam Vigiletchumi Suparayan, 61, was produced at a special court session yesterday with her son Sangar Shanmugam, 39, and daughter Pathmavathy Shanmugam, 31.

They were charged with conspiring with others to bring the three children to London. (story)

Singaporeans come to Malaysian worker’s aid

Posted by jtsmyth8 on November 16, 2007

Another example of Singaporean charity. We are good people and we help when we can. Just don’t take advantage of our good intentions.

“Mountain climber David Lim is among several people moved by the plight of Malaysian worker Abu Bakar Evos, who lost his legs in a horrific workplace accident this week. These people who called or e-mailed The Straits Times on reading about the 25-year-old odd-jobber’s plight said they wanted to help him rebuild his life after he recovers from his injuries.

Mr Abu’s left leg below his knee and his right foot were severed in a paper compactor at waste-paper recycling firm Likok in Defu Lane 4 on Tuesday. He had climbed into the compactor to clean it when the accident happened.” (story)
