Politics dragged to the playground: Chee vs PM Lee and MM Lee

Posted by jtsmyth8 on May 27, 2008

Sparks flew and insults were traded on Tuesday as opposition politician Chee Soon Juan squared off with Prime Minister Lee Hsein Loong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew in court over a defamation case.

‘Mr Lee, we meet at last,’ said Mr Chee, secretary general of the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), as he cross-examined MM Lee, 84, at a hearing in the Supreme Court.

‘You have been avoiding me,’ Mr Chee told MM Lee, who was on the stand at a hearing to assess the amount of damages to be awarded to him and his son, PM Lee, 56.

This set the stage for a series of heated exchanges between the protagonists and their counsels.

‘You have nothing of substance against me,’ MM Lee told Mr Chee in one of the clashes as Mr Chee groped for questions.

At one point, MM Lee called Mr Chee a ‘liar’ a ‘cheat’ and a ‘near-psychopath’.

MM Lee and PM Lee have already won a summary judgement against the SDP, Mr Chee and his sister Chee Siok Chin. (story)

Marcus Ng Yi Loong gets 1 week in jail

Posted by jtsmyth8 on January 8, 2008

Former teen actor Marcus Ng Yi Loong, 21, began his one-week jail term on Tuesday after he failed in his appeal to get his sentence for insubordination quashed. The High Court on Tuesday upheld the jail sentence meted out by a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) court martial in July last year. He was also reprimanded by a Military Court of Appeal for being rude to his superior.

This is the second time he has been hauled up since he started his military service in September 2006.

Ng, who holds the rank of Private, is perhaps best-known as the rebellious teen in the TV sitcom Phua Chu Kang.

Ng’s troubles in the SAF began in October 2006 when his superiors at the SAF Medical Training Institute slapped him with four charges for offences including not obeying orders.

In February last year, while he was being investigated by the SAF legal process, Ng chased and argued aggressively with a 50-year-old woman Warrant Officer in his unit’s Operations Room. (story)

Tharman becomes Finance minister

Posted by jtsmyth8 on November 29, 2007

In a widely-anticipated promotion, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam becomes Finance Minister from Saturday. He retains his other heavyweight portfolio as Education Minister – for now.

He will hold this post until after the Budget Debate next year, ‘when he will relinquish the appointment and the Prime Minister will make consequential changes to other Cabinet appointments’, said a statement from the PM’s Office on Thursday evening.

The brief three-paragraph statement left unanswered the question of just who will take over at Education.

After six years at the Finance Ministry’s helm, PM Lee Hsien Loong will step aside for Mr Tharman, who became Second Finance Minister in May last year. (story)

Singapore bans video game: Mass Effect

Posted by jtsmyth8 on November 15, 2007

So virtual sex in now illegal? It’s just a game. It’s not like people are going to run out and try to find some aliens to have sex with. (although a threesome with and alien and my g/f might be really cool) “Kissing and caressing”?! Come on, that’s just child’s play. I do that on my way to work. (maybe that’s why i get so many dirty looks) I’ll buy it overseas if I have to. It’s going to be a fantastic game.

“Singapore has banned a Microsoft Corp video game which contains a scene showing a human woman and an alien woman kissing and caressing each other, a local newspaper reported on Thursday. The Straits Times said “Mass Effect” — a highly anticipated futuristic space adventure game from Microsoft — was banned by Singapore’s Media Development Authority.

Singapore is the only country to have banned the game, so far, and it is the first Microsoft video game to be banned in the city-state.” (story)
