Less incentives for potential hires

Posted by jtsmyth8 on October 15, 2008

Tough economic times have forced companies to cut back on perks. Housing allowances, bonuses, and exclusive club memberships now no longer offered. Lengths of contracts normally 12 months are being shortened to 6 months. Now only positions deemed critical are interviewing job candidates. Traditionally a seller’s market has turned into a buyer’s market. Companies can afford to be more selective when hiring. This recession has forced even large companies into cost cutting measures to ensure long term financial stability. Despite the slowdown Asia tends to be more fiscally sound than the Amercas and even Europe. (more)

7,000 new health care jobs over the next 5 years

Posted by jtsmyth8 on August 19, 2008

These range from positions for doctors, nurses, to pharmacists and other allied healthcare professionals.

Singaporeans alone will not be enough to fill these jobs.

‘Foreign talent and foreign workers are greatly welcomed,’ said Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan on Monday.

Speaking at the National University Hospital and its healthcare union’s national day observance ceremony, Mr Khaw said many more workers are needed to provide the level of care that will be needed in the coming years.

Demand for healthcare will go up, as the population increases and ages. Singapore’s population is likely to grow from the current 4.5 million to 5.5 million by 2020. (story)

Prisoners getting more interviews than you

Posted by jtsmyth8 on March 20, 2008

This kind of upsets me. Why is a convicted criminal getting better opportunities for jobs than I am? These companies are looking for cheap labor and are willing to risk the safety of their employees to save a buck. How about paying a non-criminal a decent wage to work for you rather than a criminal?!

“Selected prison inmates no longer feel like they are on blind dates when they meet prospective employers to discuss jobs while still in jail. Under a new programme by the Singapore Corporation of Rehabilitative Enterprises (Score), inmates and employers understand more about each other well before job interviews are held.” (story)
