Malaysian couple get cheap hotel, expensive hookers outside

Posted by jtsmyth8 on June 6, 2008

Can I get the name of that hotel?

“Malaysian journalist Fauzi Baharuddin, 28, ended up with more than he bargained for when he realised that his hotel was in the heart of Singapore’s red-light district.

‘I booked the hotel as it was the cheapest I could find.’

But soon after he and his fiancee arrived at the hotel, Mr Fauzi realised that something was not right.

He said: ‘That night, my fiancee and I decided to go out for a walk and we were shocked. There were prostitutes and their clients outside the hotel who were propositioning their clients openly.'” (story)

45 Singaporean tourists in Jiuzhaigou safe

Posted by jtsmyth8 on May 15, 2008

45 Singaporeans holidaying in scenic Jiuzhaigou are stranded in the north of Sichuan province – albeit in a six-star hotel.

They spent the third day at the Jiuzhai Paradise Hotel and are not clear when they can leave the resort place.

The group was into the fourth day of an eight-day excursion with SA Tours to Jiuzhaigou, Taoping Qiang Village and the Dead Sea of China when the powerful 7.8 magnitude quake struck southwest China on Monday.

They left Singapore on May 9 and were scheduled to return on Friday. Now the returned date may be delayed.

Tour guide Wendy Zhang Wei told The Straits Times on Wednesday that all the 45 are safe and calm.

‘They are entertaining themselves with the amenities at the hotel but are still anxious to go home. There is sufficient food and water in the hotel,’ she said. (story)

Military rebels arrested as police storm hotel

Posted by jtsmyth8 on November 29, 2007

Military rebels and their civilian supporters were arrested on Thursday after Philippine forces stormed a five-star hotel where they had been holed up, a reporter at the scene said. Heavily armed security forces marched the rebels, their arms raised behind their heads in surrender, from the second floor of the five-star Peninsula Hotel into its ruined lobby, the reporter witnessed.

Rebel leader Antonio Trillanes, a navy lieutenant who was elected a senator in May, was hauled into a prison bus along with former vice president Teofisto Guingona, a 79-year-old politician who was not hand cuffed.

Brigadier General Danilo Lim and the band of rebels he led into the hotel early Thursday were also taken into the bus between a phalanx of police. (story)

A fire broke out on Wednesday morning on the rooftop of the former Specialist Centre/Phoenix Hotel in Orchard Road, which is being demolished. A construction project manager spotted the fire coming from a cooling tower on the rooftop of the six-storey building, next to the Orchard Central building which is under construction.

Thick smoke billowed from the fire site, forcing the evacuation of over 50 workers on the rooftop and in other parts of the building. Over at the adjacent Orchard Central building site, another 100 workers were also evacuated to across the road. No one was hurt. (story)
