Deleted SMS gone for good

Posted by jtsmyth8 on June 17, 2008

If you have deleted an important text message, don’t expect your cellphone company to have a magical backup server that will bail you out.

One Singapore man recently found that out the hard way when he tried to recover messages that he had trashed nine months ago.

Mr Huang Yongliang wrote to The Straits Times Forum this week asking about the possibility of retrieving the long-since-deleted texts.

‘I got curious about the policies on retrieving SMSes when I accidentally deleted mine,’ said Mr Huang.

The 27-year-old said he wanted the texts for ‘personal reasons’, but declined to elaborate.

Telecom companies, though, said customers can practically kiss the messages goodbye once they hit the delete button. The companies handle billions of messages annually and deleted SMSes are expunged from servers almost immediately, they say.

SingTel, for example, said it processes 20 million text messages a day. That adds up to around seven billion a year. (story)

Data saved by local recovery company

Posted by jtsmyth8 on May 29, 2008

Every time I read a story like this I turn on my external drive and back up my data. I’ve had 1 hard drive crash on me and that was enough. Stories like this just remind me to back up my important files. Email, photos, music, documents. You never know.

“Joe Nguyen was crushed when his home computer crashed for no apparent reason in 2005.

Desperate, he searched the Web for ideas to rescue his fond memories – all stored in the PC. He got one step closer when he found CBL Data Recovery Technologies, which specialises in retrieving data from mangled storage media.

‘But I was not confident that my files could be recovered,’ said the 36-year-old American citizen who has been living in Singapore for 15 years.

The service – at $700 – wasn’t cheap either.

Four days after dropping off his PC at CBL’s premises at Changi Business Park, he received a call to collect a DVD that contained all the information he thought he had lost – 1GB in total.” (story)

This is definitely an important service especially if your business relies on data stored on hard drives. For us home users just remember to backup those photos and mp3’s. Trust me, it will save you a lot of headaches later on.

CBL Data Recovery Technologies (S) Pte Ltd (CBL) announces the availability of its Rapid RAID Recovery Service designed to reduce corporate server downtime, accelerate server restoration and expedite the recovery of data when corporate RAID arrays fail. CBL staff will personally collect the failed hard drives from the customer, take the drives to the CBL laboratory for evaluation, provide a detailed quote, and then proceed with the data recovery upon receipt of the customer’s approval. In the meantime, IT staff can rebuild the RAID array often described as infallible in anticipation of receipt of the successfully recovered data.” (story)
