SIA supervisor charged with theft

Posted by jtsmyth8 on June 17, 2008

An inflight supervisor was fined $2,000 on Monday for stealing liquor and other items from a London-bound Singapore Airlines flight.

Ong Hong Aik, 50, admitted to stealing two bottles of Dom Perignon champagne, a bottle of Hennesy XO liquor, a bottle of red wine, caviar and other miscellaneous items worth a total of $1,116 on board the SQ308 flight on Feb 25.

He was found out by the London Customs officers who had checked on arriving cabin crew that evening.

He told them that the liquor was meant for a friend while the others were for his own consumption.

The London Police issued him a cautionary letter and released him. It informed the Singapore Airlines management about the case. (story)

Slapping case refused out of court settlement

Posted by jtsmyth8 on April 4, 2008

The wife of a tycoon, who is charged with slapping a Singapore Airlines (SIA) stewardess, tried to settle the case out of court but this was turned down by the prosecution.

The lawyer for Tan Siew Hoon, 61, said this when she made a brief appearance in a District Court on Thursday.

Mr Ravinderpal Singh told Judge Shaiffudin Saruwan that he had written again to the prosecution to consider his ‘representations’, which are normally pleas to have charges withdrawn or reduced. He asked for the case to be adjourned to await a reply.

Tan is accused of voluntarily causing hurt to Ms Then Jiamin, 25, on board an SIA flight to Tokyo, on Sept 20 last year. She and her husband, Mr Wong Ngit Liong, 65, who is the chairman and CEO of Venture Corp, one of Singapore’s biggest manufacturing firms, were in the business class cabin at the time.

If convicted, Tan can be jailed a year and fined $1,000. (story)

Singapore pilot caught with child porn

Posted by jtsmyth8 on February 14, 2008

7 video files were found on the personal computer of a Singapore Airlines (SIA) pilot who was fined A$12,000 for trying to bring child pornography into Australia, court documents showed on Wednesday. Some of the videos contained footage of rape, sexual violence and children engaged in sexual activity, the documents said.

Captain Ng Kok Yauw, 41, a Malaysian, piloted a Singapore Airlines flight last Saturday from Singapore to Adelaide, Australia, when customs officials searched his laptop and found video clips of child pornography, Adelaide court documents seen by Reuters said.

Ng, who appeared in court on Monday, pleaded guilty to charges of importing banned material and making a false statement to a customs officer.

He could not be reached for comment but Singapore Airlines, the world’s second-largest airline by market value, said the airline was conducting its own investigation. (story)

Singapore Airlines receives second A380

Posted by jtsmyth8 on January 11, 2008

Singapore Airlines (SIA) took delivery of its second superjumbo A380 on schedule from the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus on Friday, SIA said on Friday night.

The world’s largest passenger aircraft was handed over to SIA at the Airbus Delivery Center in Toulouse, France, on Friday morning (Toulouse time), said SIA in a statement.

It is expected to arrive in Singapore on Saturday morning.

SIA, Singapore’s flag airline, is the world’s first airline to fly the first A380, which launched commercial service between Singapore and Sydney in October last year after 18 months delay.

The second aircraft will complement the first, allowing some rotation of aircraft on the existing Sydney route, and providing opportunities for crew training, SIA said. (story)

Singapore Airlines A380 not for mile high club

Posted by jtsmyth8 on October 29, 2007

The A380 may have the world’s first airborne double bed, but it won’t be put to the obvious use if Singapore Airlines has its way: “If couples used our double beds to engage in inappropriate activity, we would politely ask them to desist,” said the company’s Stephen Forshaw. “There are things that are acceptable on an aircraft and things that aren’t, and the rules for behaviour in our double beds are the same ones that apply throughout the aircraft.”

In any case, the plane is as yet unchristened: Tony and Julie Elwood from Perth, Australia had booked the first A380 double suite, but hardly had a moment of privacy for a romantic kiss, let alone anything raunchier, as a parade of journalists came knocking on their door. Even so, they weren’t too impressed with Singapore’s strait-laced attitude. “So they’ll sell you a double bed, and give you privacy and endless champagne — and then say you can’t do what comes naturally?” asked Tony, a vigorous 76. “Seems a bit strange.”
