Illegal cigarettes to be fined $500 for the first time

Posted by jtsmyth8 on July 15, 2008

First time offenders caught with duty-unpaid cigarettes anywhere on the island will be fined $500 per packet from Tuesday.

In a press statement issued on Monday, Singapore Customs said the composition sum, which was initially implemented in hotspots such as Geylang and Yew Tee in Oct 2007, will now be extended throughout the island.

Elsewhere, first-time offenders would have previously been fined between $200 and $500 per packet.

The standardisation is part of Singapore Custom’s ongoing enforcement efforts, which includes increasing its manpower, to curb the demand for contraband cigarettes.

Such efforts have produced positive results in the first half of 2008. (story)
