Mass Effect hits shelves with M18 rating

Posted by jtsmyth8 on November 22, 2007

Role-playing game Mass Effect will go on sale with an M18 sticker attached to its packaging, the first game to carry a local classification rating.

According to the Media Development Authority, games rated as such cannot be sold to those under 18.

As with videos, game retailers are required to enforce the age restriction and check a customer’s ID when in doubt.

MDA did not specify the penalties for selling the game to a minor, saying that it ‘will work closely with the distributors to facilitate a smooth implementation of the system’.

According to the Films Act, those who allow minors to possess ‘obscene films’ are liable to be fined or jailed.

Six industry figures who attended consultation sessions to gather feedback on a tentative model for games classification indicated that it is modeled heavily after that for films. (story)
