Singapore police “overreacted”

Senior Minister of State Ho Peng Kee said that police ‘probably overreacted’ when Myanmese nationals here were asked to take off their T-shirts bearing messages of protest against the Myanmar regime.In Parliament on Monday afternoon, Associate Professor Ho highlighted the context of the police’s request – it was a tense situation involving local Myanmese nationals’ frustration against the junta’s harsh crackdown on peaceful protests.

‘This would further fuel the strong sentiments already gripping the emotions of Myanmese nationals here in Singapore,’ said Prof Ho.

One such T-shirt read ‘Stop the bloodshed in Myanmar’, while another read ‘Help Burma’ and ‘Help Myanmar’, he said.

Prof Ho referred to two incidents at Peninsula Plaza on Sept 29, where Myanmar nationals congregated in a show of solidarity against the junta’s violent attacks on monks and civilians during peaceful protests.
